I love stories. I love hearing them, creating them, and learning from them. I especially love origin stories. One of the questions I almost always ask new clients is "How did you come up with your business or organization name?" The result is sometimes a rich backstory rooted in purpose and history and other times the name was decided in a spontaneous and spur-of-the-moment decision. Either way, I always learn something about that client through their name.

Today I thought I would share a bit about Spark Creative's name and background. It started as something light-hearted, then evolved to be a name rich with meaning. The short answer to "where does the name 'Spark' come from?" is that it is actually the nickname my husband gave me when we were dating. He would (and still does) call me "Sparky" due to my free spirit and mind that rarely sits still. When I was trying to come up with a name for my studio, he suggested "Spark." I was a little hesitant at first...would that be cheesy? What if people knew it came from my nickname? The more I thought about it, the more it felt perfect. It captured the creativity, energy, and heart I wanted to embody.

According to Merriam-Webster, a Spark can be both a noun and a verb:

Noun: a latent particle capable of growth or developing

Verb: to stir to activity, to incite

That's exactly what I hope Spark can be: both an entity and an activity. I hope Spark is a catalyst for growth and lasting change for the businesses and organizations I serve. Intentional storytelling through design has the power to breathe new life into brands, bring people together, and have a real impact. Just like sparks turning to flames. It all starts with a spark; from a tiny spark there is unending potential for growth.
